Typical Properties
Squalene Function:
Squalene belongs to the triterpene class of compounds. Oily liquid. After absorbing oxygen in the air, it turns into a viscous liquid similar to linseed oil. Melting point -38°C, boiling point 280°C (17 mmHg), specific gravity 0.8128 (15/4°C), refractive index 1.4965, UVChemicalbookλmax<226nm in cyclohexane. Easily soluble in ether, petroleum ether, acetone, carbon tetrachloride and other fat-soluble solvents, slightly soluble in ethanol and glacial acetic acid, and almost insoluble in water. Has a slightly pleasant smell. Decomposes during distillation under normal pressure. When placed in the air, it gradually absorbs oxygen and becomes resinous.
Squalene Usage:
Squalene exists in the unsaponifiable matter of deep-sea shark liver oil, and some contents are as high as 90% of the unsaponifiable matter. Japan used squalene to treat tuberculosis in the early years, and later conducted clinical trials in hepatitis, hypertension, gastric ulcer, neuralgia, gallstones, diabetes, cancer, etc., all with varying degrees of efficacy.
Squalene is used in cosmetics to protect and nourish the skin. Since squalene has an extremely low freezing point (-72°C), it is a good low-temperature lubricant.
(1) Squalene is used as a nutritional supplement to improve liver function and tissue activity. In order to prevent oxidation, it is usually used in conjunction with vitamin E.
(2) Used in the development of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry, as stationary liquid for chromatographic analysis, organic coloring materials, rubber, spices, surfactants, etc.
