What is sodium alginate?

Sodium alginate is a by-product of the extraction of iodine and mannitol from kelp or sargasso of brown algae, and its molecule is composed of β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-L-Gullo. The uronic acid (α-L-guluronic, G) is a (1→4) bond. It is a natural polysaccharide with the stability, solubility, viscosity and safety required for pharmaceutical preparations. Sodium alginate has been widely used in the food industry and medicine.

Sodium alginate Production Process

Dry or wet seaweed (algae) is crushed, washed with water, extracted with strong alkali water, clarified to obtain crude alginate solution, precipitated with calcium chloride to obtain colored calcium alginate, after decolorization, deodorization Acid treatment, removal of soluble impurities to obtain alginic acid precipitation, and sodium carbonate to obtain sodium alginate, and then dried, pulverized, sieved to obtain sodium alginate powder.

Sodium alginate properties

Sodium alginate is a white or light yellow powder and is almost odorless and tasteless. Sodium alginate is soluble in water and insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and chloroform. Dissolved in water to a viscous liquid, pH of 1% aqueous solution is 6-8. The viscosity is stable when pH = 6-9, and the viscosity is lowered when heated above 80 °C. Sodium alginate is non-toxic, LD50>5000mg/kg. Effect of chelating agent on the properties of sodium alginate solution The chelating agent can complex the divalent ions in the system, so that sodium alginate can be stabilized in the system.

Sodium alginate uses

Food Industry: Food Additives
Thickeners and Stabilizers—Used in ice cream, yogurt, and sauces to improve taste and prevent crystallization.
Gelling Agents—Used in making jellies, puddings, and artificial caviar, forming reversible or irreversible gels.
Film-Forming Agents—Used in the preparation of edible plastic wrap to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare:
Drug Carriers—Used in the preparation of sustained-release capsules and tablets to control the release rate of drugs.
Wound Dressings—Absorb large amounts of wound exudate, forming a gel, providing a moist environment for wounds and promoting healing.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Treatment—Forms a floating gel barrier on the surface of gastric acid, effectively relieving symptoms such as heartburn.

Textile Industry: Printing Pastes—Used in printing on cotton, linen, and other fabrics, ensuring that dyes adhere evenly to the fibers and are easily washed off.

Other Applications: Used as a sizing agent in papermaking and as a binder for welding rod coatings in welding.
