Chloromethyltrimethylsilane can be converted into corresponding lithium compounds using sec butyl lithium, which can easily react with aldehydes and ketones to form a, b-epoxytrimethylsilane. This is an important intermediate for the preparation of many functional compounds. If reacted with formic acid, high yields of enol esters can be prepared. Chloromethyl trimethylsilane is also a reagent for the preparation of trimethylsilyl methyl heteronitrile.
